Legal Entity Identifiers (LEIs) are essential for increasing transparency, efficiency, and security throughout financial markets. Their use is required or strongly encouraged in various financial operations to support improved supervision and effective risk management.
Business loans — LEIs are often mandatory when applying for corporate loans or credit facilities, as they enhance counterparty verification and strengthen financial oversight within the economic system.
Risk Management — LEIs provide accurate identification and assessment of counterparties, enabling more informed decisions and contributing to greater overall financial stability.
Regulatory Oversight — Authorities such as the Bank of Canada and provincial/territorial securities regulators (including OSC, AMF, BCSC, etc.) require or recognize LEIs to comply with international standards (OSFI guidelines, derivatives reporting, MiFID II equivalence, etc.), ensure consistent reporting, and maintain alignment with global compliance and risk-control frameworks.
At LEI.NET, we deliver a clear, quick, and fully secure LEI registration experience.

Questions you may have in mind
An LEI (Legal Entity Identifier) is a unique 20-character alphanumeric code that serves as a standardized global identifier for legal entities involved in financial transactions. It is issued once and remains unique to that entity worldwide.
An LEI is required for regulatory compliance in many financial activities — especially derivatives reporting, securities trading, cross-border payments, and transactions under OSFI guidelines, IIROC rules, or international standards. It increases transparency, reduces counterparty risk, and enables accurate identification of entities and ownership structures.
Any legal entity (corporations, investment funds, trusts, partnerships, branches, etc.) that participates in reportable financial transactions, derivatives, or securities activities subject to regulatory reporting must hold an active LEI. Natural persons (individuals) are generally exempt.
Apply through an accredited LEI issuer or authorized agent (such as Canada LEI). Submit official entity details (legal name, registered address, business number, parent/ultimate owner info if applicable), complete validation, pay the fee, and receive your LEI — usually within 1–5 business days.
Pricing depends on the provider and validity period (1–5 years). One-year registration or renewal typically ranges from CAD 70–150 (≈ €50–110), with multi-year options offering better per-year value. Many services include free updates, transfers, and basic support.
An LEI is valid for one year from issuance or the most recent renewal. It must be renewed annually to remain active and compliant. Multi-year registrations cover several years in advance but still require annual data confirmation.
You pay upfront for 2, 3, or 5 years of validity at a discounted rate. The LEI stays active throughout the paid period. Your issuer typically handles or reminds you of the annual reference data validation, making long-term compliance more convenient.
Payments are secure and flexible — credit/debit cards, Interac, Google Pay, PayPal, bank transfer, or invoice. All transactions are encrypted, and you receive instant confirmation and a receipt.
Use the free official Global LEI Index search on the GLEIF website (gleif.org). Enter the 20-digit LEI code or company name to view current status (active/lapsed/retired), reference data, and ownership structure in real time.
Notify your LEI issuer as soon as possible after any change (name, address, legal form, ownership, business number, etc.) is updated in official records. Most updates are free or very low-cost and can be submitted online to keep your LEI accurate.
Standard processing takes 1–5 business days. With pre-validated applications and efficient issuers, many LEIs are issued within 24–48 hours or even the same day in straightforward cases.
Renew before expiry (ideally 30–90 days early). Log in to your provider’s portal, review/update entity data, pay the renewal fee, and submit. Reliable providers send automatic reminders and offer a streamlined renewal process.
Canada LEI provides fast, fully digital registration/renewal, 100% pre-validated submissions to prevent delays, direct official connections, secure payment methods (including Interac), completely free updates/transfers, multi-year validity up to 5 years, and expert support tailored for Canadian and international compliance needs.
Ensure all information exactly matches your official registration documents (legal name, registered address, business number/CRA number). Provide accurate parent entity or ultimate accounting consolidation details if required. Double-check for typos, attach supporting documents when asked, and select a trusted accredited issuer for reliable ongoing management.
